Local Content Hosting in Domains .РФ and .RU Debated At MSK-IX 2015 Peering Forum

The company behind .RU and .РФ extension, the Coordination Center for TLD RU/.РФ, informed the public that the MSK-IX 2015 Peering Forum, which took place in Moscow, debated the progression and operation process of the domain name system.

The participants of the conference found out from Jim Cowie of DYN Research about his study of local hosting in the .RU and .РФ domains. He emphasized the importance of regional storage for various services. Considering on which place is sent the signal, namely US coast, Eastern and Western, it may appear a lateness in the Moscow-US-Moscow signal, which varies from 100 to 250 milliseconds.

For a content that generates traffic, this is essential and it may cause a decrease in the number of consumers. While US stocks regionally all the content and the distribution of US hosting in its bordering countries is increasing (for instance in Canada with a percentage of 80%), in the European and Asian countries it was adopted another pattern. Exception to this pattern is Russia, that follows the tendency of US of storing the content regionally. More than half of the most popular Russian domains are stored locally according to Alexa.com. If in the domain .RU the distribution of local hosting is 65 percent, in the domain .РФ is 81 percent in comparison with the distribution of US hosting that is minimal.

In the Forum, Pavel Khramtsov of MSK-IX discussed about his company’s contribution in the Yeti international project, a project devoted to the survey of DNS service in the IPv6 environment. Khramstov declared that the company’s contribution in this project is for increasing the quality of their service and the staff skills, even though the incorporation of IPv6 met a few obstacles, such as a percentage of 67 of unanswered valid demands, which means the IPv6 connectivity is low.

The participants were informed, by Mikhail Yakushev of ICANN, about the particulars of relations between the operator community and ICANN. The US government aimed to discard supervision of DNS root zone according to Yakushev’s memento.

Moreover, according to Yakushev, it is expected that in a few days or weeks, ICANN working groups, will show their suggestions on setting new persons eager to accept control functions and meet all the US expectations related to these suggestions.

A different level of interaction between Internet structures on the physical (operators, IXP) and logical (ICANN) stages, which are the mirrors of the ICANN-managed L-root system, is highlighted by Yakushev. He put pressure on the technical community to show more interest in order to have opened new L-root mirrors and emphasized this was in both Russia and the worldwide network development interest.

The MSK-IX 2015 Peering Forum end up with an address provided by Leonid Todorov of APTLD. The participants found out about the studying of the market and transition of Internet traffic in the Asia-Pacific region.
