The number of domain names continues to grow around the world with 168
million domain name registrations across all of the TLDs in the second
quarter of 2008, representing a four percent increase over the first
quarter of 2008 and 22 percent growth over the same quarter last year
reports VeriSign's most recent Domain Report released this week.
The number of ccTLDs totalled 65 million domain names, a four percent
increase quarter over quarter and a 27 percent increase year over year.
The largest TLDs in terms of base size were .com, .de, .cn, .net, .uk,
.org, .info, .nl (The Netherlands), .eu (European Union), and .biz
although since this report has been compiled .cn has overtaken .de to
be the largest ccTLD.
In Latin America, domain name registrations in .com and .net domain
name registrations for the quarter grew 31 percent, outpacing worldwide
growth by 11 percentage points. This growth is reflective of strong
Internet indicators related to access, connectivity and usage.
VeriSign also noted they processed peak loads of more than 48 billion
Domain Name System (DNS) queries per day in the second quarter of 2008.
