Unauthorised domain names

A growing number of websites with unauthorised domain names are now leading team owners to take legal action against the infringers.

Rodney Ryder, partner, Kochar & Co, the law firm of Deccan Chargers, says, "Unauthorised domain names could be used for commercial purposes leading to significant damage to brand names, cyber fraud and data fraud."
In India, complaints about illegal domain names can be filed at The National Internet Exchange of India. This might take about two months for the dispute to be solved.
Typically, in such cases, the illegal domain names are transferred back to the legal brand owners. The process generally takes a couple of months to be resolved.
Mohit Burman, co-owner, Kings XI, says, "We are finding out who the illegal domain names riding on our brand name belong to, and we will take legal action against them."
BCCI recently posted on its Web site that the registration of domain names using IPL names which infringes upon its trademark and any attempt to divert web traffic could result in "civil penalties and criminal prosecution."
