DnJournal has just finished breaking down the industry-wide reported domain sales data for the second quarter of 2010 to see how the latest quarter stacked up against the previous quarter as well as the same quarter last year (2Q-2009).
Buoyed by several blockbuster sales, including Slots.com ($5.5 million), Dating.com ($1.75 million), Photo.com ($1.25 million) and Flying.com ($1.1 million), the total dollar value of domain sales reported to us in 2Q-2010 was just over $29.1 million. That is a 26% jump over the $23.1 million in sales reported in the previous quarter. It represents and even bigger 38% increase over the same quarter a year ago (2Q-2009) when total sale came in at just $21.1 million.
The year over year increase is even more impressive when you consider that in 2009 one of the major aftermarket sales venues, the AfternicDLS, was still reporting all of their sales to us (midway through the first quarter of this year, the company decided to start reporting only a small sampling of their weekly sales). If all AfternicDLS sales had been reported in 2Q-2010 as they were in 2Q-2009, several million more dollars would have been added to our $29.1 million total for the most recent quarter.
Since a few big sales at the ultra high end of the market can skew total dollar sales figures from one quarter to the next we always like to look at median sales prices too (the median is the price at which half of all sales were higher and half were lower). That number also rose since the previous quarter. In 1Q-2010 the median sales price reported to us was $2,643. In 2Q-2010 the median increased to $2,750, a 4% increase. Compared to the same quarter a year ago when the median price was $2,488, the 2Q-2010 jump reached double digits - going up 10.5%. (Keep in mind that we track only four-figure and up sales so our medians would be lower if we also followed sales sub $1,000 sales).
