Domain names are now considered 'more important than CEOs'. 82 per cent of companies believe losing their domain name would be more damaging than losing their CEO.

In a survey, conducted by global domain name marketplace Sedo.com, shows the need for a strong online presence should be top of the corporate agenda. The survey found 72 per cent of respondents believe securing the right domain name is more important than finding the right staff or the right physical location/street address. However, the survey, conducted at the recent Internet World show in London, also shows domain strategy lacks clear ownership across businesses...

It found the often contrasting worlds of IT (in 45 per cent of cases) and marketing (36 per cent) are the most common owners within businesses. Nora Nanayakkara, director of business development at Sedo, said: “An unsuitable domain name strategy can spell the end for a start-up or growing business. We’ve seen companies flounder purely on account of having an inappropriate web address.” “With domain names such as vodka.com selling for six-figure sums, it’s clear domain names are in high demand among businesses but until strategies are implemented from the very top of the company, businesses will continue to lose out.”

With more than 11.5 million URLs listed for sale, Sedo is the world’s largest domain sales database. It holds regular auctions for buyers and sellers and provides services ranging from domain buying, selling and monetisation to brokerage services and Internet domain appraisals. These can all be found through Sedo.com.
