At present, once you have sent in a transfer request, there is a so-called ‘grace period’. This is a five-day period, during which your old registrar can approve the transfer (in which case it goes ahead before the five days are up), or your new registrar can decide not to accept your domain name and cancel the transfer. Under the new system, there will be no grace period: a transfer will be actioned as soon as SIDN receives an appropriate request from your registrar. This means that domain name transfers can go through very quickly. Just how quickly depends on how long it takes your registrar to act on your transfer request. Some registrars take longer than others.
More information
The procedure for making a transfer request varies from one registrar to the next. Some will want you to submit a request via the firm’s website; others will want you to send in a physical form. So, if you want to transfer your domain name from one registrar to another, you always need to find out what the procedure is with your existing registrar and your new registrar.
