On Tuesday 25 January, SIDN, the .nl registry, was awarded an ISO27001 certificate by DEKRA. SIDN is one of the first registries in the world to gain recognition for ensuring that its operations meet this international quality standard, which focuses on internal information security.
ISO27001
ISO27001 serves as a model for defining, implementing, operating, checking, assessing, maintaining and improving information security management systems. ‘SIDN has traditionally placed a lot of emphasis on information security,’ says Bert ten Brinke, SIDN’s Security Officer and the man behind the certification project. ‘To obtain ISO certification, we had to put internal security on a systematic footing and make it integral to the way we operate.’
Reliability
SIDN’s CEO Roelof Meijer is pleased to see the registry’s efforts recognised: ‘The security of the .nl domain is our top priority here at SIDN … and good internal arrangements are a vital part of our security strategy. ISO certification shows that information is properly protected within SIDN, which in turn helps to make the .nl domain more reliable. Our registrars and the .nl registrants can now be sure that SIDN’s internal information security is professionally organised and regularly tested against an international standard. And the quality of our set-up is certain to get even better, because the certificate will be renewed only if we have a continuous improvement cycle in place.’
The ISO certificate was awarded by DEKRA for a period of three years. DEKRA will check information security at SIDN on an annual basis.
