Rethinking Your Domain Portfolio

During these uncertain financial times, cash flow has certainly ebbed to more of a trickle for investors; enticing many to impulsively sell their assets in response. However, before you take any drastic measures with your domain investments, it’s important that you keep in mind the long-term scope of the market and start working on making your domain portfolio efficient not empty for the future. For large domain portfolio holders, now is the time to invest in the sales of your quality domains, instead of unloading them in a state of panic. It’s important to seriously reevaluate which of your domains are going to show you a return on your investment and which aren’t pulling their weight. Once you’ve selected your top domains, I suggest taking the initiative to extend their registration to avoid any unwanted drops and consider selling the ones that cost more to maintain than they are worth. Many domain names can cost up to $30 a year to register at some registrars, so if you own a hundred domains there, and they generate little to no traffic or sales leads, then that’s a $3,000 a year investment that you many never see a return on. By trimming your registration budget to include only the truly valuable domains in your sales portfolio, you can refocus your energy on trying to drum up big sales.

To help get lack luster domains off your hand, you should give domain monetization (commonly known as domain parking) a try. If you monetize (park) these domains with Sedo and set them to a low fixed-price, you won’t have to waste time negotiating for the sale of a domain name worth relatively little. Sedo’s fixed-price option allows domains to be sold immediately once a potential buyer agrees to the domain’s listed sales price. This is a great, ‘no fuss’ way to unload your unwanted inventory for free, so you can focus on more your more lucrative domain investments.

When you are final ready to enter the marketplace with a clear head and portfolio, make sure you follow up with your investments by staying on top of pricing, exposure and the offers your domains receive. To help you feel more confident when accepting an offer on your domains, try studying your domains worth through Alexa.com, URL trends and other online resources, so you can gauge for yourself their true worth. If you still aren’t quite sure what price to set your domain for, Sedo offers a domain appraisal service tha can help you access how valuable your domains really are. We also offer featured listings to help quality domains become more visible to potential buyers. Although Sedo is the world’s largest domain marketplace and we encourage you to take advantage of our services, we also recognize that listing your domains for sale on several marketplaces can help sell your domain.

When you own a domain portfolio, it’s important to take the time to access each domain individually to avoid hasty decisions that work for some your domains but not for all of them. By weeding out the domains that are holding you back, you can appreciate and nurture the domains that have the potential to bring you a brighter and more profitable future.
