On 13 July 2009, AFNIC submitted its contribution to the public consultation on "the Internet of the Future" set up by the French Secretary of State for Forward Planning and Development of the Digital Economy.
- AFNIC is one of France’s centres of expertise on the Internet of the Future;
-as we see it, the priority for the future is to construct a global communications infrastructure based on open standards and interoperable systems;
- the ‘disruptive’ approach apparently favoured by the report is certainly useful, but it seems to us that, in France, the main priority is to strengthen incremental research with a strong experimental component;
-as for the organisation of research on the Internet of the Future in France is concerned, the primary challenge is to maintain a local ecosystem that is well integrated at the global level. To this end, we believe that the priority in France should be a flexible and a streamlined coordination, rather than the creation of new structures.
