Lesley Cowley, CEO at Nominet, the national registry for .uk domain names said Nominet will support the end of the Joint Project Agreement between the US Department of Commerce and ICANN .
We strongly support the measures outlined in the Affirmation of Commitments as these provide the insurance needed to maintain and reinforce ICANN's public-interest responsibilities. We believe these measures, coupled with a strengthened role for the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) and a series of ongoing independent reviews to measure performance, will provide ICANN with a strong framework that will help it serve the international community, the domain industry and more importantly the many governments, organisations and individuals across the world that depend on the effective functioning of the domain name system.
Putting public interest first will also be a focus for the UK Internet community over the coming months as there is growing support for Nominet to develop more of a 'public purpose' role. Again, we welcome this positive shift as it reinforces our commitment to always represent and protect the end-user. We believe that responding responsibly to the dynamic and ever-changing demands of the Internet sector will allow the community to keep pace with the market and help make the Internet a trusted and safe place going forward."
