Nominet wants to change the rules of registration for .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domain names

Nominet has recently announced that it intends to change the rules of registration for .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domain names in order to make sure that each company is entitled to a unique domain name while at the same time reducing the potential for abuse . Under the current rules characters like "&" or "@" are ignored, making it possible for more than one company to be entitled to the same domain name .

You can read the announcement after the jump :

"Nominet is proposing to change the rules of registration for .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domain names to ensure that each company is entitled to a unique domain name while at the same time reducing the potential for abuse.

Under the current rules any characters which cannot be represented in the DNS (e.g. "&" or "@") are ignored. Because of this, it was possible for more than one company to be entitled to the same domain name.

We are now proposing to amend the rules to align them with the procedure used by Companies House in order to determine if a proposed company name is the same as one already on the companies register. Under the proposals, any characters that cannot be used in the DNS would be converted to text rather than being deleted.

Stakeholders can now give their views on these changes and how the new rules could be applied to existing .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domain name registrations. Comments should be emailed by 31 January. "
