NIC Mexico Launches Registrations For Second Level Domains

Nic Mexico has launched a pre-registration period for third level domains for holders of .COM.MX, .NET.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX and .GOB.MX domains. To be eligible, all registrants needed to have held a domain name under of the above sub-domains before March 1, 2009.
For example, if you had registered store.com.mx you will be able to register store.mx.

There are several requirements. These being:
  • the new registrant of the domain must be the same as the registrant of the existing domain name
  • if two people request the same domain name the priority will be given to the person who has the registration under .COM.MX, .NET.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, or .GOB.MX for the longest period
  • all domain names must not be less than three characters
  • registration periods will only be for one year
  • all domains registered at the second level will cost US$35
  • the duration of the pre-registration period will be from May 1, 2009 to July 31, 2009.

Following the pre-registration period there will be a Waiting Period. During this period no new requests will be allowed, but the requests during the Pre-registrations will be processed. There are also several requirements for registrations during this period, these being:

  • all the domains requested and assigned will be activated at the end of this period
  • in case it is considered that the domain name was not assigned under the rules and policies of the Pre-registration period, the owners could initiate a “Process of not Approval of the Assigned domain name under .MX” for which they have 20 days.
  • the duration of the Waiting Period will be one month from August 1, 2009 to August 31, 2009.

Following this, registrations will be open to the public for an Initial Period of Registration.

Again there are several requirements, these being:

  • requests will be processed by order of arrival - first come, first served
  • the domains will not be able to be shorter than 3 characters
  • registration period will only be for one year
  • prices for domain names when they are opened to the public will be announced at a later dated
  • the duration of the Initial Period of Registration will be two months from September 1, 2009 to October 31, 2009.

There are some reserved domains which will not be able to be available for registration.
