Active ImageThis is unofficial, but according to Verisign's latest e-mail to registrars around the world, they claim to have acquired the London-based, Carlyle-backed company that runs the .name top level domain. Verisign, which also runs the .com, .net and .org domains, among others, sent the following e-mail to all registrars stating:

"We are pleased to announce that VeriSign closed on an agreement to acquire Global Name Registry, Ltd., which includes management of the .name top level domain on October 1, 2008. We believe the addition of .name is a natural fit, as we have run the technical backend in support of .name for more than five years.

What does this mean for existing registrars?

Active ImageMoniker’s Extended Online Auction at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. New York concluded last night with total sales of more than $900,000, bringing the total sales for Moniker’s live and online domain auctions to nearly $4 million. Moniker’s Live Domain Auctions held at the New York conference logged sales of approximately $3 million.

Attracting a winning bid of $91,331, the domain garnering the highest value in the extended online auction was Loto.com, the Spanish word for lotto. Nearly 200 domains sold in the extended auction. The preliminary results of the extended online auction are listed below:

Michele Neylon believes the time may have come for the current .ie registry operator to be changed, believing that while the current registry operator, IEDR, has improved over the last few years, it "is probably not the best organisation to manage the ccTLD in the future."
