ICANN recently approved draft proposals that would see the biggest ever expansion of domain name choice.

Under the draft proposals anyone would be allowed to apply for a generic top level domain (gTLD), resulting in an unlimited number of gTLDs. Currently, there are a limited number of gTLDs, including .com, .net and .gov (and .com.au, .net.au and .gov.au in Australia), which are strictly controlled by ICANN and each country’s internet regulatory authority (for example, .au Domain Administration for .au domain names). ICANN has introduced several new gTLDs, such as .biz, .travel and .asia, but the draft proposals could allow gTLDs such as .ebay and .yahoo.

This article continues directly on from Part 12 and Part 13 in the series on the domain industry.

This brings up the most important point that we need to never forget, traffic really is king. It's the one unique resource that everyone needs and they're prepared to pay for it. This is why I think that while domains keep on generating traffic then we'll all still be in the game. Someone, somewhere will want to pay for it no matter what Google and Yahoo actually decide in their corporate ivory towers or if parking company mergers happen.
