Neustar offers protection from DDoS attacks

"According to a new DDoS report by the Yankee Group, The Business Case for Managed DDoS Protection, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are becoming larger, more frequent and dangerous.  These cyber assaults have gone from broad-based, un-targeted threats with nuisance-level impact to highly targeted and sophisticated attacks with the ability to disable enterprises.  To safeguard websites, bottom lines and brand reputations, comprehensive DDoS protection is vital, the study concludes. This includes the ability to mitigate attacks on DNS infrastructure, HTTP traffic and other common targets.

In a recent interview with Stores.org, Pierre Mifsud, Director of Internet Operations for Lego Co., explained the importance of DDoS mitigation. “You have to stop attacks if you want to maintain the services that you have promised to deliver,” said Mifsud.  “If you are providing a service like a game [that] people have paid for … you can’t just bring it down because then you have to compensate your consumers, which can be very costly. It also can give you a very bad reputation.”

Global brands like LEGO use advanced mitigation services to defend their website traffic. LEGO also shields its DNS with the built-in DDoS protection  of Neustar’s UltraDNS platform. Such a broad-based approach is essential, since LEGO relies on the Internet to connect to suppliers and manufacturers, plus for logistics, shipping, supply chain management and procurement.  Reducing the risk of cyber attacks is key to business continuity.

In addition to offering DNS-level DDoS protection, Neustar has developed SiteProtect, a cloud-based service that stops attacks on Web traffic, email, APIs and more. Activated by customers when they are under attack, SiteProtect routes traffic to Neustar’s mitigation network, comprised of scrubbing centers located across the globe. The network cleans traffic, filtering out the harmful variety, letting only legitimate visitors reach the customer’s infrastructure. A step beyond solutions requiring on-premises hardware, SiteProtect has the bandwidth to repel large-scale DDoS attacks. As an on-demand service, it lets the customer control when to mitigate and incur costs.

“SiteProtect lets our customers minimize the risks to their growing Web assets,” said Alex Berry, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Services, Neustar. "It gives them the best of both worlds--a powerful, proven way to mitigate DDoS attacks at a fraction of the cost of other approaches."

In a detailed assessment of SiteProtect, Doug Toombs of Tier 1 Research concludes, “While it would be nice to live in a world where DDoS attacks didn't exist, the reality is that they are here, and are not likely going away any time soon. But with an off-premises mitigation offering like SiteProtect, it may just seem like DDoS attacks don't exist at all.”
