One character domains are unavailable for registration. Ever wondered why? Well, apparently all gTLD registries are contractually obligated under their contracts with ICANN to reserve single character names.
Change in in the air however! The .MOBI and .COOP's Registries have put a request in front of ICANN to release single, and dual character in .COOP's case, to them on May 29th. Companies such as American Airlines, who own http://www.americanairlines.mobi/ but are not using it, may very well be interested in getting their hands on the shorter http://www.aa.mobi/ version instead.
This request may be granted since ICANN's GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organization) even recommended last year that 1 and 2 character domains be released. ICANN is considering auctioning off the single character .COMs, a move that is not very popular with many, considering that they own then resource they are selling.
The .mobi registry is especially interested in makingthis happen since shorter names are much easier to type into mobile devices of course.
