With .XXX almost a certainty to come to life in the next few months,
the registry must be happy with the interest in the new TLD. As of today
there are almost 310,000 .XXX domains pre-registered despite opposition
from the adult entertainment industry.
Pre-registration has been underway for some months now as ICM Registry,
the registry operator, grew more confident it would get approval but
grew quickly upon news of its approval by ICANN with around 30,000 extra
registrations in the 24 hours following, and over 80,000 registrations
in the three days following approval.
However pre-registration is not a commitment to buy a name, but it does
give the pre-registrant first option on their domain name.
Pre-registration is available for adult community members who are the
registered holders of an adult site created before 1 February 2010.
Holders of such domain names may submit a reservation request for the
corresponding names in .XXX . Applicants can submit their domains
through ICM’s website at and, if successful, will receive a token, to be
used when registering through ICANN accredited registrars.
Intellectual property rights holders who are not members of the adult
community are also permitted to submit a reservation request for domains
that they currently own and use in their business.
.XXX domain names will attract a premium above the price of popular
gTLDs and ccTLDs, something that has irked the adult entertainment
industry, with prices likely to be around US$60 per year compared to
around US$20 per year for a .COM name, meaning ICM Registry is likely to
have a lucrative business underway in the very near future.
Requests to reserve a .XXX domain name are available at domains.ICMRegistry.com.
