.IE Irish Domain Registry Q3 Report

Active ImageAccording to a new report that is circulating, IEDR, the IE Domain Registry, is reporting a 20.3% jump in the net number of Irish .ie domain registerations in Q3 compared to the same period last year. New registrations amounted to 8,197 new .ie websites, registered between July and September 2008.

This increase brings the total number of .ie websites registered in Ireland over 110,000, just four months after the 100,000 barrier was broken earlier in May this year. 83.3% of those new .ie registrations were registered by corporations and sole traders while personal domains blogs and other non-commercial websites, accounted for only 2.5% of the registrations.

One of the main reasons for the increase is claimed to be five consecutive years of price reductions by the IEDR, lowering the cost of registering a .ie domain by over 60% since 2003.

Also newsworthy is the fact that for the first time this quarter the IEDR has made multiyear registrations available to resellers (registrars) for a period of up to 10 years. The IEDR plans to extend this service moving forward. It is important to note the absence of multiyear renewals which should definitely be introduced to support this plan.

This report is not published officially on IEDR's web site yet, which seems a bit curious. It is a registry's task to provide transparency to the public and we encourage IEDR to disclose all aspects of their operations, including recent downtimes on their web site. Failing to communicate with the public is unacceptable and needs to be addressed.
