The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) held educational sessions about new gTLDs to an audience attending Internet Week in Tokyo,Japan .
You can read the press release after the jump :"In support of ICANN's ongoing campaign to raise awareness about the risks and opportunities new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) might usher in, prominent members of ICANN's extended community led educational sessions in Tokyo this week.
Through the proactive invitation of the Japan Network Information Center (JPNIC), a national Internet registry in Japan, ICANN helped Internet enthusiasts celebrate Internet Week with presentations and discussions at the Fujisoft Akiba Plaza. Occurring Thursday and Friday, the various events include:
- ICANN Board member Kuo-Wei Wu, CEO of the non-profit National Information Infrastructure Enterprise Promotion Association, delivering a one-hour presentation and answering audience questions
- ICANN Board member Ray Plzak, President Emeritus of the American Registry for Internet Numbers, speaking on "New gTLDs: the Future of Online Innovation," with simultaneous interpretation
- Ms. Etsuko Nakanishi, of Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs & Communications, presenting a report as a member of ICANN's Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC)
- Sylvia Herlein Leite, representing ICANN's At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC), with a videotaped message
- Mr. Hirofumi Hotta, of Japan Registry Services (JPRS), briefing an audience of issues related to the country codes Name Supporting Organization (ccNSO).
- Mr. Yukari Takayama from JPNIC, one of the drivers in helping ICANN appear in Tokyo for Internet Week, providing an overview of events from ICANN's October meeting in Dakar, Senegal.
ICANN is attempting to reach all corners of the world so that institutions have all the accurate information they need in order to assess how new gTLDs will affect them. This week's activities will soon be followed by more December events in China, Russia, Europe, Jordan and more."
