ICANN is expected to release a revised Draft Applicant Guidebook this week as part of their consultation process in planning for the calling for applications for new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs).
The delay is a setback for potential applicants who have invested much
time and money in preparing for an application, but find repeated
delays in the process. However ICANN is been determined to ensure they
have got the process right."This is literally thousands of voices shaping the next layer of innovation on the Internet and we're documenting it for all to see," Paul Levins, Executive Officer and Vice President - Corporate Affairs at ICANN told Tech Daily Dose.
Levins told the Tech Daily Dose there is more work to be done on trademark issues; security and stability; worries about increases in malicious conduct; and supply and demand examination. ICANN is committed to consulting with all stakeholders -- including the World Intellectual Property Organization -- to craft the right policy, he said. "We're not rushing this. We are listening and acting," he added.
Paul Levins notes, the Tech Daily Dose reports, this will not be the last revision of the guidebook. Levins said there is more work to be done on trademark issues; security and stability; worries about increases in malicious conduct; and supply and demand examination.
It is likely applications for new gTLDs will be delayed until the end of the year with key issues to be debated at the ICANN meeting in Mexico City from March 1 to 6.
"'The new TLDs will be very interesting. I strongly believe they will result in a great user experience and will encourage more growth and more competition,' said Tobias Wann, VeriSign's European leader of domain name services," reported vnunet.
"But it has to happen in a thoughtful manner, taking into account the technical implications."
