
ICANN Singapore meeting ended .This meeting was a historic one,after ICANN approved on 20 June the new gTLD program .From now on ,Internet address names will end with almost any word in any language.
"ICANN's achievements in Singapore have made history.After years of discussion, debate and deliberation with many different communities -- including business groups, cultural organizations and governments -- we have opened the door to an era of creative innovation unlike any other since the Internet's inception," said Rod Beckstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Meeting highlights include :
- ICANN approved the new gTLD program
- The Board of directors elected Steve Crocker as Chair of the Board .
- Bruce Tonkins was named Vice Chair
- Two other Board members were seated : Chris Disspain, Chief Executive Officer of Australia's .au Internet registry, and Bill Graham, former head of the Internet Society's strategic global engagement activities
- Approved a new .NET registry agreement with VeriSign
