SIDN linked up with Hirsch Ballin and Frank Heemskerk , plus various other market players, to announce that it will be making a structural contribution to improving internet security for consumers/internet users.
Together, SIDN and its partners have set up the Internet Security Platform, which officially starts work today and will address problems such as the distribution of child pornography over the internet. ECP-EPN – the Platform for the Information Society – will host the Internet Security Platform’s Programme Office.
Improving internet security
The goal of the newly created Internet Security Platform is to make a structural contribution to improving internet security for the consumer/internet user. The platform will seek to play an agenda-setting role and to lead by example. This will involve highlighting social trends and translating them into practical initiatives, on the basis of agreements on various matters made between the participants. The focus of the platform will be on increasing internet security with a view to preventing consumers/internet users being exposed to unlawful and/or criminal activities. Along with internet child pornography, issues to be tackled include hotspots, phishing in the Netherlands and the balance between crime prevention and privacy.
Wide responsibility
SIDN is one of the market players participating in the Internet Security Platform. Roelof Meijer, SIDN’s CEO, commented, ‘I regard this as an important subject, because what we are talking about here is the quality of the biggest and most all-embracing communications medium in our history … a medium that plays a vital role in our daily working and personal lives. SIDN is taking part because we play an important technical and administrative role in the management of .nl domain names, but see our responsibility as extending beyond that role. We are in a position to contribute to universal open internet access and to enhanced quality and security for the user.’
