Global IP Association Testified Before U.S. Congress about Dangers of Pending Changes to Domain Name System

The International Trademark Association’s (INTA) President, Richard Heath, testified before the United States Congress at the Subcommittee on Courts and Competition Policy hearing on the “Expansion of Top Level Domains and its Effects on Competition.”

At the heart of the hearing and Mr. Heath’s testimony were concerns related to the proposal by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to expand the domain names space by allowing an unlimited number of new top-level domain names to be introduced to the Internet in the coming months.
Mr. Heath provided testimony on behalf of trademark owners on the harms that may result from an unlimited expansion of new generic top-level domain names. INTA believes the proposed expansion raises numerous Internet-related public safety and health concerns, arising from the misuse of trademarks.“
