Over the years we’ve been on top of many trends, from Spyware, Blogs, Blooks, tubes, and others. Buying trendy domains is a subject which deserves much coverage on its own (I will try to write about it soon) but today I’m going to talk about something I find more challenging, more intriguing: Conceptual Domaining.

Via The Domains:

"A simple question but one I have never heard asked.

Has anyone ever lost money on a domain??

Specifically what I am asking has anyone ever bought a name for a premium at a drop auction, private purchase, or industry auction and then resold the domain for less?

"Rick Schwartz: In an economy like this, marginal domains will be the ones that will suffer the most. The majority of the domains I see, are just plain worthless. In times like these folks get more choosey. But they don’t stop buying. I think the market is still expanding. New investors are always coming in and some are coming in with deeper pockets and looking for a new area to invest in. The things we have taken for granted for a decade or more are now being realized by others. I would expect volume of domain name sales to continue to go up.

The GNSO Council is considering the issue of "domain tasting", a term used to describe the case when someone registers a domain name and then tests to see if the name has sufficient traffic to provide more income than the annual registration fee (usually through pay-per-click advertising). If the name is deemed sufficiently profitable, it is kept.

The GNSO Council approved a resolution to recommend to the Board a modification of the ICANN bylaws that would permit electronic absentee voting in certain circumstances in order to allow Council members who are absent from Council meetings to vote.

Currently, a member of the Council is unable to vote on an issue when absent from the Council meeting at which the vote occurs. The Council found that this not only disenfranchises members from opportunities to vote, but also, disenfranchises the constituencies they represent.

Stephane Van Gelder, chief editor at DomainesInfo.fr, writes on his blog that the French government officially released a public consultation about who should run the .FR domain extension.

So, is France gearing up to change its registry?

According to Stephane's post, that question has been bugging the people at AFNIC ever since the French government published a decree on February 8th 2007 in which it was clearly stipulated that there would soon be an RFP (request for proposals) for the management of .FR.

Microsoft proposed purchasing Yahoo for for $31 a share in January, is now allegedly poised to offer as much as $32 or $33 a share. However according to the report major Yahoo shareholders are still looking for something in the range of $35 to $37 per share.

Last Saturday marked the deadline that Microsoft imposed on Yahoo several weeks ago to accept its buyout offer or Microsoft would launch a hostile take over. Microsoft declared it would launch a proxy fight to oust Yahoo’s board or walk away from the deal if the two failed to reach an agreement by April 26.

Today, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that he was prepared to walk away from his attempt to buy Yahoo if his other options don’t look good. Ballmer made his comments during a regularly scheduled town hall meeting with employees, during which workers questioned him about Microsoft’s pursuit of Yahoo.

Mark Sweney writes for Guardian.co.uk that official-sounding websites are being used by domain name speculators (cybersquatters) against London's mayoral race candidates.

According to the article, his counterpart Boris Johnson has been more proactive in protecting his online image than his bitter rival Ken Livingstone. Cybersquatters are taking advantage of intense interest in the London mayoral elections and have been registering dozens of domain names relating to Labour's London mayoral incumbent Livingstone and his challengers, Conservative candidate Johnson and the Lib Dems' Brian Paddick.
