NASK, the Polish .pl registry, reports that the one millionth .pl domain has been registered. Andrzej Bartosiewicz, the head of NASK's Internet Domain Division, said that the one millionth domain has been registered on May 6th 2008.
Currently, there are 95 entities cooperating with NASK, including 37 foreign registrars. The Partnership System has allowed domain subscribers to choose from among several dozen service providers.
Initially NASK controlled all .pl domain registrations themselves but over the last five years that has completely changed. Currently, 95 percent of the names registered in the .pl domain are handled by partners, while less than 5 percent of the domains are handled by NASK. Moving forward that trend will continue and eventually 100% of all registrations will be handled by partner registrars.
Furthermore, Andrzej Bartosiewicz explained that, “In recent years NASK also launched additional services, such as “Domain Name Tasting” (known as “Domain Testing” in Poland) and the “Wait List Service” (known as “Domain Option” in Polish). Domain Name Tasting (DNT) consists of registring a domain for fourteen days at the price of 1.00 Polish zloty, which allows the subscriber to test the traffic generated by that domain. The Wait List Service (WLS), or “Option”, allows the subscriber to obtain the preferential right to register a domain, provided that the domain in question will not be renewed or deleted. These services encourage an active trade in domains”.
NASK's approach to the value of the .pl internet domain has changed in recent years. Not so long ago, the domain was treated quite “technically” as an address necessary for a correct operation of business servers or electronic mail. Currently, the domain has gained real market value due to its growing importance in both traditional and innovative online business ventures. It can be “bought”, “sold”, “rented” or treated as a profitable investment instead of putting money in more traditional forms of investment, such as shares or real estate
Maciej Kozłowski, NASK's director added that, "As a registry for the national domain .pl, NASK actively participates in the works of the Council of European Top Level Domain Registries, an organisation uniting most of European registries and many non-European ones. This makes it possible to follow trends in the development of the global domain market and be up-to-date both from the technical and organisational points of view. Since the very beginning of the existence of CENTR the Polish registry has played an important role in the international community dealing with the registration and maintenance of internet domains. This was confirmed by the re-election of Andrzej Bartosiewicz to the post of the CENTR Chairman during the last General Meeting of this association in March 2008”
Internet domains, including the .pl domains have become virtual real estate, which has a lot in common with traditional real estate: a good address or location is an ideal place to develop a profitable business. Since the number of attractive domains is limited, and since you can still purchase good internet 'locations' with a relatively low investment output, experts predict that this climate will foster the continued growth of domain values. Those forecasts are corroborated by the development of the global secondary domain market where new and innovative services continue to appear, for example, Fusu.com, a domain name stock exchange, new and cheaper auctioneers, and new registration and domain recovery services.
This new trend of domain investing can now also be seen in Poland with the .pl domain. Andrzej Bartosiewicz claims that, “currently, 8 percent of the domain names registered in the national .pl registry's only aim is to generate traffic (also known as “domain monetization”). If added together with domains registered as pure investments, this ratio amounts to about 10 percent.
