.EU is "a real and tangible success"

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the Digital Agenda, hailed the .eu top-level domain as “a real and tangible success” in her speech at a dinner hosted on 12 April 2011 to celebrate the top-level domain’s fifth birthday.

Mrs Kroes called .eu “a great tool” for European businesses, predicting that future growth in the .eu top-level domain will come from reaching out to more small- to mid-sized enterprises (SMEs). The list of international companies using .eu for their European online presence is growing ever longer she observed.

During a review of the last five years, Mrs Kroes noted that the inclusion of Cyrillic, Greek and special Latin characters in .eu domain names, known as Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs), reinforces Europe’s multicultural and multilingual heritage. “EURid plays a crucial role in putting into practice our cultural diversity online,” she said.

The EC Vice-President welcomed EURid’s efforts in the field of Internet security, especially .eu’s successful implementation of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) in September 2010, and concluded that these activities help “protect the Internet from large scale failure and make it a place where everyone is safe”. EURid, the dinner host, is the registry for the .eu top-level domain.
