With changes taking place to lead to the introduction of new Top Level
Domains (TLDs), expertise in this area is in short supply. To help
would-be applicants, the founders of dotBERLIN have decided to share their expertise with others considering applying for a new TLD and founded DOTZON. DOTZON consults, develops and implements TLD projects for companies and organisations.
DOTZON - Incubating New TLD Name SpacesWith ICANN expected to call for new applications for TLDs in 2009 or
2010, the number of new TLD initiatives has been proliferating
following several years of extensive worldwide consultation.
Once applications are called for, it is possible new TLDs such as
.EBAY, .AMNESTY or .Blog become reality. New to this extension is that
organisations and companies will be eligible as well to apply for their
respective company name or trademark like .COKE, .MARS or .BEETLE.
To help would be applicants, DOTZON will work with them to develop the
strategy for the planned TLD, lobby for the TLD with the appropriate
stakeholder groups and write the application. After the approval of the
TLD the DOTZON team also supports preparing the launch and operation of
the TLD as well as the fulfilment of the ICANN requirements.
"Companies now have the opportunity to set up their own TLD such as
.COMPANY or .TRADEMARK," said Dirk Krischenowski, co-founder and
partner of DOTZON, while attending Domain Pulse in Dresden today.
"Applicants may find they only get one shot at applying for a new TLD
though, as TLD strings will be distributed on a first come, first
served basis."
"It is essential for any applicant to be able to demonstrate a demand
for their new gTLD. Any applicant without a serious business plan is
likely to fail in their application, and also in the market if they
were successful."
DOTZON is one of the few companies familiar with the current
requirements applicants have to fulfil for acquiring their own TLD.
DOTZON's extensive network extends to include all stakeholders involved
in the domain name industry including ICANN directors, ICANN staff,
constituencies and stakeholder groups, registrars, registries,
politicians and government in Germany, the EU and worldwide.
DOTZON has been founded by Dirk Krischenowski, Johannes Lenz-Hawliczek
and Katrin Ohlmer. They have set up and developed the .berlin project
for a city TLD in recent years and have more than ten years of
knowledge and experience in the domain name and internet industries.
Clients of DOTZON include companies listed on the DAX stock exchange
among other institutions and organisations.
