- Non-Profit Web Domain Corporation to Offer Support of Environmental Initiatives -
[news release] The DotGreen Registry Corporation, a
California Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation, has selected Neustar,
Inc. to provide the registry and DNS (Domain Name System) services
required to support the .green global Top-Level Domain (TLD).
DotGreen
is preparing its application to the Internet Corporation of Assigned
Names and Numbers (ICANN) to manage the new .green top-level domain in
2010. Conceived in 2007, .green was the first environmental TLD
proposed to international environmental groups, and the DotGreen
Registry Corporation remains the only announced non-profit public
benefit corporation to seek such an environmental domain. DotGreen
accepts philanthropic donations, has no owners or shareholders, and
will give 100% of its profits to hundreds of green projects and green
organizations aimed at sustainability in every region of the world.
In
addition to providing a highly reliable and secure registry and DNS
technology service, Neustar has existing relationships with over 250
domain name registrars worldwide - offering a global distribution
channel that will support success on behalf of the environment in the
new TLD marketplace.
"Neustar is unique among registries, and a
wonderful match for .GREEN," said Annalisa Roger, founder of DotGreen.
"We are very pleased to collaborate with people known for their
integrity and global neutrality who have many years of domain industry
experience among them."
"[DotGreen's] non-profit status cannot
be underestimated in their application process," added Stacey Kertsman,
executive director of www.eduWeavers.org. "It validates their vision
and makes the TLD an even more compelling choice for anyone interested
in identifying with the 'green' movement."
DotGreen supports
green business and will provide a socially responsible and
internationally recognizable branding opportunity to companies,
products and individuals who purchase a .green name. Those who
participate and believe in .green going forward will be contributing to
humanitarian and environmental solutions.
"Neustar is very
pleased to be selected by the DotGreen Registry in its efforts to apply
for, launch and operate the .green global Top-level Domain - and to be
associated with an organization that is so committed to environmental
and humanitarian causes," said Tim Switzer, vice president of Neustar
Registry Services. "We believe businesses, organizations and
individuals around the world will want to use a .green web address to
demonstrate their commitment to environmentalism."
"DotGreen has
developed an innovative and socially responsible organizational model
for the .green domain name space," said J. Keith Gilles, dean of The
College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley.
"Increasing public concern over climatic change, biological diversity,
product safety and a host of other issues make the establishment of a
.green domain most timely."
