Domain Registration Scam Hits .fr

AFNIC is advising registrants of .fr domain names of a scam asking them to register for a service with the "Registre Internet Français" directory by a German company called DAD Deutscher Adressdienst GmbH. The service offered costs between €800 and €1,000. There have been many enquiries to AFNIC as to the legitimacy of the offer, leading to AFNIC to clarify that it has no link whatsoever with DAD Deutscher Adressdienst GmbH. Their address is Postfach 760230, 22052 Hamburg, Germany. AFNIC also advises it offers no such service.

AFNIC also advises concerned .fr registrants to read their guide on slamming, published in September 2006, available from www.afnic.fr/actu/nouvelles/general/NN20060914.

A sample of the letter is available from www.afnic.fr/data/actu/public/2008/courrier-dad-deutscher.pdf.
