DNSSEC global uptake slow, reports .eu registry

87% of the world’s top-level domains (TLDs) have yet to deploy the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) protocol, according to a new .eu Insights report published today by EURid, the registry for the .eu TLD.

In the report “Overview of DNSSEC deployment worldwide”, the .eu registry states that only 37 of the world’s 283 active TLDs (13%) have enabled DNSSEC to varying extents, as revealed by an assessment it ran in September and October 2010. DNSSEC-enabled TLDs include .biz, .gov, .info and .org in addition to country-code extensions such as .be, .eu, .fr, .nl and .uk.
“EURid’s new .eu Insights report shows that, although the DNSSEC deployment momentum is slowly building, it still needs to gather pace. As more TLDs join in, DNSSEC enablement will become standard and automatic. This is essential to make the Internet a safer place,” said Marc Van Wesemael, General Manager of EURid.
EURid today also published a companion .eu Insights report “DNS SECurity Extensions technical overview”, in which it provides a technical background on the DNSSEC protocol and shares its experiences gained since deploying DNSSEC to the .eu TLD on 15 June 2010.
Both .eu Insights reports are available for download here . The .eu Insights series is based on surveys, studies and research conducted by EURid, in cooperation with industry experts and sector leaders.
