DENIC announced in an email to members last week that they, along with
the ccTLD managers from .it, .be, .si, .lt and .hr, have applied for
membership to the ccNSO - the Country Code Names Supporting
Organization of ICANN.
While the process was a very long and often controversial discussion
process, DENIC believes it has significant benefits. The discussions
involved, among other things, significant amendments to the ICANN
statutes with regard to the position of country code registries. So
after carefully weighing the pros and cons of joining, the Executive
Board and the Supervisory Board of DENIC decided the advantages of
membership clearly outweighed the disadvantages and thus decided to
join the organisation.DENIC believes that a joint administration and coordination of the central Internet resources by the industry concerned and by all relevant stakeholders is the right way. Moreover, we have always supported the model of industrial self-regulation also on an international level. So joining the ccNSO for DNIC was a logical step towards formally contributing to this self-organisation as the DENIC registry and to help in shaping it in the future.
