Body formed to manage kanji-based domain name for Japan

The Internet Association Japan and other Internet-related organizations said Monday they have set up a joint body to manage the use of the kanji character for Japan as its Internet domain name.

The move precedes an expected decision by the U.S.-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to introduce Internet addresses in Japanese and other characters in addition to the English alphabet, officials said.
ICANN, which manages domain names or addresses on the Internet, currently limits them to English. The use of the kanji character for Japan as its domain name will take effect possibly in 2010 if the ICANN authorizes the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry’s recommendation of the newly established organ as the manager of the new Japanese country code.
