Argentina Disputes Falkland Islands... Again

The Falkland Islands is becoming the focus of another dispute involving Argentina, this time over the administration of the .FK ccTLD.

The Asociación Argentina de Usuarios de Internet (Argentine Association of Internet Users) has written to ICANN in an effort to eventually have administration of the .FK ccTLD transferred to Argentina.

Sovereignty of the Falkland Islands has long been disputed between the British and Argentines, as has sovereignty of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands who have the .GS country code.

The Asociación Argentina de Usuarios de Internet has written to ICANN requesting the administration of the two country codes be transferred to Argentina in a timely manner and that they consider the Asociación Argentina de Usuarios de Internet as the only authority with the authority to manage both ccTLDs.

The request follows a decision in 2007 for ICANN to designate a working group in order to solve the problems associated with the current definition of the ICANN geographic regions.
