The domain name America.com, up for auction last week on Sedo, failed to reach its reserve price. The highest bid was US$1.71 million. It had been hoped the domain name would reach a price of between $3.5 million and $7 million.
Other premium domain names that were up for grabs last week on Sedo
included diamantes.com and cognac.com. Cognac.com sold for $88,000
while diamantes.com, like America.com, is still available for potential
buyers to make an offer.
The failure of such a premium domain name to reach such a high price
could be an indication of the downturn in the global economy, and in
particular the United States' economy.
Some had speculated the domain name would surpass some of the biggest
sales such as sex.com ($12.5m), Games.com (almost $11m), Porn.com
($9.5m), Beer.com ($7m) and Vodka.com ($3m).
It will be interesting to watch domain sales over coming months to see
if this is a blip or part of an ongoing trend reflecting wider global
issues.
