A global trade association for the adult entertainment industry has
written to ICANN expressing their outrage at the prospect of a .XXX top
level domain, saying the proposal is "not of the industry and that the
proposal does not have the community's support.
The letter from Diane Duke, the Executive Director of the Free Speech
Coalition (FSC), a trade association of the adult entertainment industry
has members around the globe, and is based in Los Angeles.
In the letter Duke also says the proposal for .XXX has the "added intent
to 'regulate' an industry it knows nothing about" and finds this
"simply untenable".
Duke requests, in the interest of transparency, the ICANN board consults
with the adult entertainment "community to test the application's true
level of support." The FSC said they would facilitate this process.
And in more scathing criticism, Duke says the FSC finds "the current
structure of IFFOR, the sub-organization that would set policies for all
.XXX domains, is wholly unacceptable to FSC no matter the final verdict
regarding sponsorship."
IFFOR is the International Foundation for Online Responsibility that ICM
Registry, who proposed the .XXX TLD, have established to manage.XXX.
IFFOR would comprise a board of directors that represent child
protection, privacy, security, free speech and online adult
entertainment interests.
Duke concludes that the FSC's "resolute position is that no
self-respecting industry would ever agree to have a minority voice on a
board tasked with setting critical policies for its members."
