Why the .com is Still in Command

Established in January of 1985, the .com is one of the five original generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs). It has become the most recognizable Top-Level Domain (TLD) available and investors continue to utilize its popularity for profit. In fact, according to VeriSign’s Domain Report in Sept, new registrations for .com alongside .net domains continue to grow by 20% percent year over year, with the .com remaining on top with more new registrations than any extension. Even with the introduction of new and targeted domain extensions, such as the most recent .mobi and .me domains, the .com still remains the top dog of TLDs.

Domain Standards and Mobile Phones

Domain Standards and Mobile Phones

I've been using the same old mobile phone for the past four years. It's almost become an extension of me with its friendly chirping ring tone, photos of happy moments and a very expansive diary and calendar.

I recently went to answer my phone only to have it slip out of my hand and crash to the floor at my feet. Ever since then I've been staring at a screen that's just not quite right and the happy sounds that it made before disappeared amidst a collage of beeps that seemed to reflect a hackers delight.

Sadly, like the dog "Old Yella", I knew it was time to put my old faithful phone down and see what new delights the market could offer. After spending the best part of a day in research (ie. being lied to by mobile sales people) I was deciding between an iPhone and an HTC Diamond.

Public Comment: GNSO Council Member Term Limits

Public comments are invited on a proposed change to the ICANN bylaws that would implement term limits for GNSO Council members. Currently there is no limit to the number of consecutive terms in which a GNSO Council member may serve. In November 2006, the GNSO Council passed a resolution endorsing term limits, wherein a council member could serve no more than two consecutive terms (http://gnso.icann.org/resolutions/#200611 ).  Moreover, a former council member must remain off the GNSO Council for one full term prior to serving any subsequent term. In light of the pending GNSO review which was underway at the time, the ICANN Board postponed action on term limits.

Kentucky Tests State's Reach Against Online Gambling

Kentucky Tests State's Reach Against Online Gambling The Washington Post provides a good outline of the attempt by the state of Kentucky to seize more than 140 online gambling domain names. The article says the case is raising novel legal questions about the physical location of digital property and the reach of local and regional governments on the global Internet. ... Attorneys for the state convinced Judge Thomas Wingate that the gambling domain names were tangible "gambling devices" that could be seized under Kentucky's gaming statutes. Wingate's order compels the entities that manage the registration of those domains, known as domain registrars, to transfer control over the Web sites to the state.

Naming Rights: Are you plagued by a bad domain name? You may soon have a shot at a better one The Wall Street Journal looks at the likely approval by ICANN of new gTLDs saying the difficulty in obtaining a .com name will lead many to look at alternatives when they become available. The article refers to domains "the endings on Web addresses, such as .com and .gov". The article also notes there is disagreement on the outcomes of allocating more gTLDs, with some of the view it will only create confusion in the online marketplace.
