After a break of 6 years from selling .cn domain names, GoDaddy decided it’s time to sell again.
This activity stopped due to the Chinese government repression in December, 2009, who made the .cn registry CNNIC to start imposing some requirements to registrars without alerting the non-chinese registrars. Companies were required to gather business identification, plus a Chinese business registration number, a color headshot photo identification and physical signed registration forms from the registrant. Those who didn’t fulfil these demands were not allowed to register .cn domains to users and GoDaddy was among those who completely disagreed.
As if it wasn’t enough bad, China demanded the same information from all 1,200 registrants who have recorded 27,000 .cn domain names at GoDaddy within 15 days. According to General Counsel Christine Jones only 20 percent of the customers delivered the information, while the rest were at risk of losing them.
At that time, media suggested that GoDaddy will stop having as option the .cn domain name, information which proved to be true for 6 years.
.cn domain names keep dropping
As it was predicted from the beginning, in the next years the call for .cn domain name dropped. In the first four months it was registered a drop of 39%, which should not cause any surprise knowing the reasons. Although the main reason was the crackdown on usage of the domain, it seems that this not ends here, the finish of promotional pricing being another strong ground, .cn domain being available for 1 yuan just for a short while. If at start looked like a promising domain name, after this situation dropped to the 3rd largest ccTLD, after .de and .uk.
Compared to the 14 million .cn domain names registered in February 2009, at the end of January 2011 there were registered about 3.5 million domain names. In 2009 the .cn domain name ranked the first with the highest number of registrations.
Reopening .cn domain names to individuals
In May 2012 the .cn registry, CNNIC, announced that registrations became disposable for individuals and not just for businesses.
With all the speculations that GoDaddy will start offering again, the company maintained on the same position according to Rich Merdinger, Vice President of Product Development – Domains:
“We are monitoring recent developments with CNNIC involving domain name registrations. We will also be listening to our customers about their demand for .CN domain names.”
In present GoDaddy doesn’t seem to think the same way and began to sell again, showing its strong desire to enter into the Asia market.
To be on the same page with other registries and registrars, GoDaddy now agrees to give all the sensitive information to China.
Those interested in buying from GoDaddy a .cn domain name have to provide the following information, which will be redirected to CNNIC:
• A current resident ID, temporary resident ID, organization code certificate or business license from China.
• A current passport, driver’s license or business license from Singapore, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.
• A current passport or driver’s license from Canada, Australia or US.
While being away from the Chinese market, GoDaddy together with other registrars missed the growth of domain registration at the end of 2015.
